TEST FOR CARBONATE IONS (CO3 2-)
Test: Add dilute nitric acid HNO3 (aq)
Obs: effervescence observed, colorless and odorless gas evolved formed white precipitate with limewater. Gas evolved is Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
TEST FOR SULFATE IONS (SO4 2-)
Test: Acidify first with dilute nitric acid HNO3 (aq), then add aqueous barium nitrate Ba(NO3)2 (aq)
Obs: White precipitate is formed BaSO4 (s)
TEST FOR CHLORIDE IONS (Cl-)
Test: Acidify first with dilute nitric acid HNO3 (aq) then add aqueous silver nitrate AgNO3 (aq)
Obs: White precipitate is formed AgCl
TEST FOR IODIDE IONS (I-)
Test: Acidify first with dilute nitric acid HNO3 (aq) then add aqueous silver nitrate AgNO3
Obs: (pale) Yellow precipitate is formed AgI
TEST FOR NITRATE IONS (NO3-)
Test: Add aqueous sodium hydroxide NaOH (aq), then add aluminum foil and warm carefully
Obs: Colorless, pungent gas evolved which turned red litmus paper blue. Gas produced is ammonia NH3
