Santa Maria: External Mosaics

• Madonna and Child in the center

• The Madonna is breastfeeding jesus (Unlikely depiction, some thought it LASCIVIOUS)

• 10 women holding lamps (5 lit, 5 unlit)

• 5 lit lamps were thought to be representative of those enlightened by religion(???)

Santa Maria: Internal Mosaics

• Byzantine Style 12th - 13th century

  • Primarily 2D, a LOT of gold, some shading, minimal perspective

• Depicts the Assumption of the Virgin into heaven

• The lamb in the middle representing the holy lamb

• Accompanying painting shows the virgin being called by an angel

  • The virgin is never depicted as dead, only sleeping

• Icon - Mainly used for worship and not necessarily meant to be the most elaborate/aesthetic

• Byzantine ideology assumed that icons in a way gave access and allowed communication with the divinity portrayed
