Eukaryote
Organisms whose cells have a nucleus enclosed within membranes.
Beta-Globin
A component of hemoglobin that binds oxygen, important for red blood cell function.
Heterotetramer
A protein structure composed of four polypeptide chains, in this case, two alpha-globins and two beta-globins.
Hemoglobin
An oxygen-transporting protein found in red blood cells, consisting of globin polypeptides and heme groups.
Cluster
A group of similar genes located close together on a chromosome.
Pseudogene
A non-functional gene that resembles a functional gene but has mutations preventing its expression.
Intron
Non-coding segments of a gene that are removed during RNA splicing.
Exon
Coding segments of a gene that are expressed and translated into proteins.
Locus
The specific physical location of a gene on a chromosome.
Gene Duplication
A process by which a segment of DNA is copied, resulting in two copies of that segment.
Zeta-Globin
A type of globin protein that can substitute for alpha-globin in hemoglobin.
Epsilon-Globin
A type of globin protein normally expressed during early embryonic development.
Gamma-Globin
A globin protein that is abundant in fetal hemoglobin, allowing for higher oxygen affinity.
Delta-Globin
A type of globin protein that can replace beta-globin in adult hemoglobin.
Transcription Regulation
Process by which the expression of genes is controlled, influencing when and how much protein is made.
Heme Group
An iron-containing molecule that binds oxygen, found within the hemoglobin protein.
