give and explain 2 hazards of the heart dissection and explain how they can be overcome:
scalpel/scissors - sharp/could cut skin → cut away from fingers
heart - biohazard, risk of contamination → wear lab coat, goggles, gloves. wash hands, disinfect equipment/surfaces prior to/after dissection. dispose of heart safely in a bin that will be taken away on the same day
give an overview of the heart dissection:
before cutting - identify coronary arteries. run water into top of heart to see valves close, squeeze to see valves open
cut down each side of heart - identify tendinous cords, examine thickness of walls, stick finger/needle through aorta/pulmonary arteries
give the ‘do’s of a biological drawing:
include a title
take proportions into account
use single, clear, joined lines
write labels horizontally
include magnification and scale (where relevant)
give the ‘don’t’s of a biological drawing:
shading
sketchy lines
arrowheads
hanging lines
