Elements of Art

The fundamental visual tools used to create and analyze artwork, serving as the basic ingredients of a recipe.

Point

The smallest visual element in art; it marks a position in space and is the beginning of a line.

Line

A continuous mark made by a moving point.

Horizontal Line

A line type that expresses calm and peaceful qualities.

Vertical Line

A line type that expresses strength.

Diagonal Line

A line type that expresses movement and action.

Curved Line

A line type that expresses softness and elegance.

Zigzag Line

A line type that expresses energy and excitement.

Broken Line

A line type that expresses rhythm.

Shape

A flat, two-dimensional enclosed area created by lines or colour.

Organic Shape

A flat two-dimensional shape derived from natural objects, such as leaves, clouds, and flowers.

Inorganic Shape

A flat two-dimensional geometric shape, such as a circle, square, or triangle.

Form

A three-dimensional object having height, width, and depth.

Organic Form

A three-dimensional object representing natural items, such as the human body, rocks, or fruits.

Inorganic Form

A three-dimensional geometric object, such as a cube, cone, or cuboid.

Colour

A quality of light which reflects from an object, adding emotion and visual interest.

Hue

The purest form of colour.

Value (Colour Property)

The lightness or darkness of a colour.

Intensity

The brightness or dullness of a colour.

Texture

The surface quality of an object.

Actual Texture

The real, physical feel of a surface that can be touched, such as rough stone, smooth glass, or thick paint.

Implied Texture

A flat, two-dimensional visual illusion that makes a drawing or painting look like it has a specific texture.

Invented Texture

Patterns or texture created by an artist that do not try to copy real life.

Space

The area within, around, between, or above the components of a piece; creates the illusion of depth on a flat surface and defines boundaries of 3D artworks.
