Circuit Training
Completing a series of exercises with high reps (15 plus) and low weight by moving from station to station with little rest in between.
Calisthenics
Exercises that use your own body weight, such as push ups.
Long Term Goals
Goals that may be achieved in a period of time such as a semester, a year, or longer, which are achieved using short-term goals.
Short Term Goals
Goals that can be achieved in a few days or weeks and help you achieve your long-term goals.
Principle of Overload
A training principle stating that you must make your body do more than it is used to doing in order to improve.
Principle of Progression
A training principle stating that you must increase how hard you work gradually in small increments.
Principle of Adaptation
A training principle stating that your body will adapt to the demands you place on it, so you must change your program frequently.
Specificity
A training principle stating that you must train the muscles and systems that are used.
Reversibility
A training concept stating that if you do not exercise regularly, how hard you work decreases in small increments.
Reps
Short for repetitions, defined as one lift (for example, 15 bicep curls represents 15 reps).
Sets
A group of reps that are done in succession followed by a rest period.
Resistance Training
An exercise done with resistance (weight) for the purpose of increasing strength or endurance.
Cardiovascular Fitness
The efficiency of the heart, lungs, and blood vessels to supply the muscles with nutrients and oxygen while one is physically active.
Muscular Strength
The maximum force that a muscle can exert when making a single contraction.
Muscular Endurance
The ability of muscles to contract over a period of time without fatiguing.
Flexibility
The range of motion that is possible around a joint.
Body Composition
The ratio of fat to lean body tissue, including muscle, bone, water, and connective tissue such as ligaments, cartilage, and tendons.
Target Heart Rate Zone
An exercise intensity range calculated as 60% to 80% of Maximum Heart Rate, where MHR=220−age.
Healthy Active Living
A lifestyle that involves the integration of active living and healthy living into a person's daily life.
Physical Fitness
The ability to carry out daily tasks easily and have enough energy to respond to unexpected demands.
