Body image
A person's perceptions, feelings, and thoughts about their body, usually regarding body shape, size, and physical attractiveness.
Body image stressors
Societal attitudes about physical attributes, appearance, and performance that can impact a client's self perception of their body image.
Culture
Shared beliefs, attitudes, values, traditions, and goals; societal characteristics common to a group or individual.
Emotional intelligence (EI)
The ability to perceive, understand, control, manage, and evaluate emotions.
Ideal self
What a person desires to be, such as strong, intelligent, respected, or appreciated.
Identity confusion
An unclear sense of self, individuality, and personality due to the inability to adapt to identity stressors.
Identity formation
A complex, lifelong process whereby an individual develops an understanding of themselves within family, cultural, and social contexts.
Identity stressors
Life events that threaten self-concept, like gender dysphoria, career loss, separation, or discrimination.
Role ambiguity
Lack of clarity in understanding the actions needed to achieve goals and expectations.
Role conflict
When individuals face conflicting role expectations and are unable to meet them at the same time.
Role overload
When roles and responsibilities exceed an individual's ability to manage them effectively.
Role performance
The actions taken to effectively execute the tasks associated with a specific role.
Role strain
Difficulty in meeting the responsibilities of a particular life role due to incompatible demands.
Self-awareness
The ability to see oneself clearly and objectively through reflection and introspection.
Self-concept
Beliefs one holds regarding their qualities and attributes.
Self-concept congruence
When a person's ideal self is consistent with their actual life experiences.
Self-concept incongruence
When a person's ideal self is not consistent with their actual life experiences.
Self-efficacy
A person's perceived ability to successfully complete a task.
Self-esteem
An individual's generalized sense of self-worth measured by the value they place on themselves.

Life events that can impact self-esteem, such as disability, chronic illness, or loss of social support.
