Postive psychology
The scientific study of human flourishing, with the goals of promoting strengths and virtues that foster well-being. Resilience, and positive emotions, and that help individuals and communities to thrive
Posttramatic growth
Postive psychological changes following a struggle with extremely challenging circumstances and life crises
Psychoneuroimmunology
The study of how psychological neural, and endocrine processes together affect or immune system and resulting in health
Sleep
A periodic, natural loss of consciousness as distinct from unconsciousness resulting from a coma, general anesthesia or hibernation
Subjective well-being
Self perceived happiness or satisifaction with life. Used a long with measures of objective well-being (for ex) physical and economic indicators) to evaluate people’s quality of life.
Processing
Parallel- processing multiple aspects of a stimulus or problem stimultaneously, Sequential- processing one aspect of a stimulus or problem at a time; generally used to process new info or to solve difficult problems
Hallucinations
False sensory experiences, such as seeing something in the absence of an external visual stimulus
Hypnagogic sensations
Bizarre experiences such as jerking or a feeling of falling or floating weightlessly, while transitioning to sleep (also called hyponic sensations).
Health psychology
A subfield of psychology that explores the impact of psychological, behavioral, and cultural factors on health and wellness
Circadian rhythm
Our biological clock; regular bodily rhythms (for ex, of temp and wakefulness) that occur on a 24-hour cycle
Resilience
The personal strength that helps ppl cope with stress and recover from adversity and even trauma
waves
Delta- the large, slow brain waves associated with deep sleep, Alpha- the relatively slow brain waves of a relaxed, awake state
Aerobic excercise
sustained exercise that increases heart and lung fitness; also helps alleviate anxiety
consciousness
Our subjective awareness of ourselves and our environment
cognitive neuroscience
The interdisciplinary study of the brain activity linked with cognition
mindfulness mediation
a reflective practice in which people attend to current experiences in a non-judgemental and accepting manner
Dual processing
The principle that information is often simultaneously processed on separate conscious and unconscious tasks
REM sleep
Rapid eye movement sleep; a recurring sleep stage during which vivid dreams commonly occur. Also known as paradoxical sleep, because the muscles are relaxed and the other body systems are active.
blindsight
A condition in which a person can respond to a visual stimulus w/o consciously experiencing it
NREM sleep
non-rapid eye movement sleep; encompasses all sleep stages except for REM sleep
