Atomic Number
The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom, which determines the chemical properties of an element and its place in the periodic table.
Atomic Mass/Mass Number
The total number of protons and neutrons in an atom's nucleus.
Electron Configuration
The arrangement of electrons in the energy levels or shells around the nucleus of an atom.
Groups (Periodic Table)
Vertical columns in the periodic table containing elements with similar chemical properties due to having the same number of valence electrons.
Periods (Periodic Table)
Horizontal rows in the periodic table, representing elements with the same number of electron shells.
Radioactivity
The phenomenon of emitting radiation spontaneously.
Alpha Radiation
A type of radiation consisting of alpha particles (helium nuclei) emitted during radioactive decay.
Beta Radiation
Beta radiation consists of high-energy, high-speed electrons or positrons emitted during the radioactive decay of an atomic nucleus.
Gamma Radiation
A type of electromagnetic radiation of high frequency emitted during radioactive decay.
Mendeleev’s Periodic Table
An early version of the periodic table, arranged by atomic weight, that left gaps for undiscovered elements and predicted their properties.
