Beakers
Used to hold liquids and contain reactions; not for actual volume measurements.
Erlenmeyer Flasks
Used to hold liquids and contain reactions, especially where swirling is involved; not for actual volume measurements.
Graduated Cylinders
Used to measure volume accurately; 100 mL measures to the first decimal place, 10 mL measures to the second decimal place; read from the bottom of the meniscus.
Test Tubes
Used to contain small reactions; stirring should be round and round, not up and down.
Wash Bottle
Used to dispense deionized (DI) water; only fill with DI water and empty at the end of each lab.
Stirring Rod
Used to stir reactions or aid in solid transfer to another container.
Rubber Policeman
Attached to one end of a stirring rod, used to scrape out solids.
Spatula (aka Scoopula)
Used to transfer solids, such as when weighing out a reagent.
Glass Funnel
Used in gravity filtration to hold folded filter paper, which catches the residue (solid).
Crucible Tongs
Used to move an ignition crucible and its lid, also suitable for transporting 50 mL beakers.
Watch Glass
Used as covers on beakers, to hold litmus/pH paper for testing, and to hold wet filter paper for drying.
Wax Pencil
Used to write on glassware for labeling purposes; markings should be removed after use.
Pipets
Used to measure volume to an accuracy of 2 decimal places; comes in volumetric (one specific volume) and calibrated (several volumes) types.
Pipet Bulb
Used with pipets to transfer liquid into the pipet by vacuum suction.
Buret
Used to measure volume to an accuracy of 2 decimal places (second decimal estimated); measures volume dispensed by subtraction of initial and final readings.
Stopcock
A valve on a buret that is turned to dispense liquid.
Buret Clamp
Used to hold up to two burets on a ringstand, allowing for adjustment of height.
Clamp Holders
Used to hold clamps onto the ringstand, allowing for varied positioning of clamps.
Clamps (3 Prong/Finger)
Used to hold various items in place using the ringstand as a backbone; tightness can be adjusted.
Bunsen Burner
Used to provide a controlled flame to heat reactions; lit using a striker, never left unattended, tip of inner blue cone is the hottest part.
Clay Triangle
Used to hold an ignition crucible or evaporating dish stable while being heated with a Bunsen burner.
Ignition Crucible
Used to contain solids that can be heated with a Bunsen burner; ceramic material designed to withstand high heat; requires preparation by heating gently before use.
Ignition Crucible Lid
Used to contain solids/powders in an ignition crucible while allowing gas flow.
Gooch Crucible
Used in vacuum filtration to collect solid (residue); cleaned with water but never heated over a Bunsen burner.
Evaporating Dish
Used to heat larger amounts of solids over a Bunsen burner or evaporate small amounts of liquids.
Vacuum Filter Flasks
Used to collect the liquid (filtrate) during vacuum filtration; has an 'arm' to connect a hose for vacuum.
Buchner Funnel
Used in vacuum filtration to collect larger amounts of solid; top snaps off for easy weighing.
Stir Bar
Used in conjunction with a magnetic stirrer (stirplate) to automatically stir solutions.
Mortar & Pestle
Used together to grind solids into powders, with the mortar as the 'bowl' and the pestle as the 'tool'.
Ringstand
Provides a 'backbone' to hold various clamps for fixed support of lab items.
Iron Rings
Attach to the ringstand to hold items like a glass funnel or ignition crucible for filtering or heating; often used with a clay triangle for security.
Stirrer (aka Stirplate)
A magnetic device used with a stir bar to automatically stir solutions; has a dial to adjust speeds.
Striker
Used to light the Bunsen burner by creating sparks from a piece of flint.
Beaker Tongs
Used to handle or carry beakers when they are too hot to touch by hand.
Walter Adapter
Used to hold the Gooch crucible inside the mouth of the vacuum filter flask during vacuum filtration.
Wire Gauze
Used to hold hot items while cooling slowly, preventing cracking from rapid cooling.
Balances
Used to measure mass in grams (accuracy to 3 decimal places); use weighing paper and clean spills immediately.
Ovens
Used to dry solids/filter papers to constant mass; items should be labeled, and the door latched properly.
Centrifuges
Used to separate solids and liquids in centrifuge tubes; must be balanced with even numbers of tubes and roughly equal volumes.
Fume Hoods
Used when working with flammable and/or toxic chemicals; blower pulls air away; sash height must be at or below the indicator, and work done at least 6 inches inside.
Hotplates
Used to heat items at a controlled temperature without an open flame; temperature can be adjusted.
Digital Thermometers
Used to measure temperatures of liquids (in Celsius to first decimal place); probe is sharp, and the cord must be kept away from heat.
