Potable
Water that is safe to drink
How is water quality tested
By measuring the amount of substances beside water in a water sample
Current
A stream of water that moves within the ocean. Carries warmer and cooler water
Rip current
When the ride is receding, pulls large amounts of water through a narrow gap quickly
Hard water
Water that has lots of calcium and magensium
Salinity
Total amount of salts dissolved in water
Water softener
Removes iron and other dissolved mineral in water to make it clean
3 Erosion Steps
Sea arch
Sea stack
Sea stump
Waves
Water doesn’t move very far, the waves move in up and down movements
Effects of waves on shores
Change shape of shore
Erode away the shore
Brings sand, garbage, seashells to the shore
Swell
Small waves created by a storm, that combined produce larger waves
Fetch
Distance wind blows over water
Tides
Causes by the gravitational force of the moon.
2 high tides and 2 low tides per day
Tsunami
Large displacements of water usually from undersea earthquakes and landslides above ground. Not dangerous in ocean but dangerous in land.
3 River Zones
Erosion zone
Transfer zone
Depositional zone
Erosion
Transport of rock and soil can occur because of chemical weathering. Gradually dissolves more and more
Deposition
Laying down or depositing of sediments. Slower the water moves the less it can carry, it deposits all sediment to the bottom creating deltas
Weathering
Causes erosion, wearing away do earth/rock due to chemical physical or biological means
Watershed
Area of land where all the water falls into it drains into a common outlet
Brackish water
Mix of salt and fresh water
Estuaries
Transition zone between a river and the ocean. Mixed both salt and fresh water, is a good habitat for water life
