Term Labor

Labor occurring at greater than $37\text{ WKS}$ of gestation ($> 37\text{ WKS}$).

Pre-term Labor

Labor occurring at $36\text{ weeks}$ or less.

Dilation

Opening of the Cervix, measured in centimeters with a range of $0\text{--}10\text{ cm}$.

Effacement

Thinning of Cervix, measured in percentage with a range of $0\text{--}100\%$.

Fetal Station

Location of the fetal head in relation to maternal ischial spines, measured in a range of $-5\text{ to }+5$.

Tocodynamometer (TOCO)

An electronic fetal monitor component used to assess uterine contractions.

Fetal HR Baseline Normal Range

$110\text{--}160\text{ bpm}$.

Rupture of Membranes (ROM)

Breaking the amniotic sac containing amniotic fluid.

Cephalic / Vertex Presentation

Head presentation of the fetus during labor.

Transverse Presentation

Fetal position where the fetus is positioned transversely.

SVD

Spontaneous vaginal delivery.

TOLAC

Trial of labor after Cesarean.

VBAC

Vaginal birth after Cesarean.

Newborn Pulse

Normal baseline of $110\text{--}160\text{ bpm}$; can vary during sleep (as low as $80\text{ bpm}$) and vigorous crying (up to $180\text{ bpm}$). Apical pulse is counted for $1\text{ full minute}$.

Newborn Temperature

Normal range of $97.7\text{--}99.5^\text{o}\text{F}$ axillary.

Newborn Respiratory Rate

Normal rate of $30\text{--}60\text{ bpm}$, counted for $1\text{ full minute}$.

Term Infant BP at Birth

$75\text{--}95 / 31\text{--}55\,\text{mmHg}$.

Term Infant BP at 12 Hours

$50\text{--}70 / 25\text{--}45\,\text{mmHg}$.

Term Infant BP at 96 Hours

Routine Newborn Medications

Erythromycin ointment (Ilotycin), Vitamin K injection (Phytonadione / AquaMEPHYTON), and Hepatitis B vaccine.

Common Antepartum Medications

Azithromycin (Zithromax), Betamethasone, Heparin, Enoxaparin (Lovenox), Labetalol (Normodyne, Trandate), Magnesium Sulfate ($\text{MgSO}_4$), Methyldopa (Aldomet), Nifedipine (Procardia / XL), Nitrofurantoin (Macrobid), Terbutaline (Brethine), and Zolpidem (Ambien).

Common Postpartum Medications

Carboprost (Hemabate), Docusate Sodium (Dialose/Doss), Ferrous Sulfate ($\text{FeSO}_4$ / Iron), Ibuprofen (Advil / Motrin), Methylergonovine (Methergine), and Oxycodone / acetaminophen (Percocet).
