cervical vertebrae

located in the neck between the base of the skull and thoracic vertebrae in the trunk; 7 present

atlas - 1st cervical vertebra

articulates with the skull at the occipital condyles; irregular ring with 2 lateral masses connected by a short anterior arch and longer posterior arch; no body and no spine

axis - 2nd cervical vertebra

has a dens (odontoid process) articulates anteriorly with the anterior arch; body is inferior to the dens; spine is posterior to the body

hyoid bone

suspended in the neck from the styloid process of the temporal bone by the paired stylohyoid ligaments; forms base of tongue and larynx; does not articulate with any bones, muscles

internal skull foramina

inner openings of the optic canal, superior orbital fissure, foramen ovale, foramen spinosum, foramen lacerum, jugular foramen and foramen magnum
