Sensation
The process that occurs when sensory information is detected by a sensory receptor.
Perception
The way that sensory information is interpreted and consciously experienced.
Bottom-up processing
A system in which perceptions are built from sensory input.
Top-down processing
The interpretation of sensations influenced by available knowledge, experiences, and thoughts.
Muller-Lyer illusion
An optical illusion where lines appear to be different lengths but are actually the same length.
Cornea
The transparent covering over the eye through which light waves are transmitted.
Pupil
The small opening in the eye that allows light to enter; its size can change based on light levels and emotional arousal.
Iris
The colored portion of the eye, containing muscles that control the size of the pupil.
Lens
The curved transparent structure that serves to further focus light onto the retina.
Retina
The light-sensitive lining of the eye that receives images and sends signals to the brain.
