Why were there tensions at Potsdam?

  1. There was a new president: Truman, who was less willing to work with Stalin

  2. On 16th July 1945, the USA had successfully exploded the first A-bomb. They now had a massive advantage over the USSR

  3. Expansion of Communism: Although free elections had been agreed for countries freed by the end of the war, there was little evidence that Stalin would let this happen in Eastern Europe.
