Vacuum forming
An easy manufacturing method used to create hollow plastic products by heating a sheet of plastic and pulling it over a mold using a vacuum.
Thermoplastic
A type of plastic sheet that is heated from above until it becomes malleable for forming.
Malleable
A state of the plastic sheet when it has become soft and flexible due to heat.
Mold
An object used in vacuum forming that the malleable plastic is forced onto to take its specific shape.
High impact polystyrene
The specific plastic sheet material usually required to begin the vacuum forming process.
Vacuum on and off switch
A part of the vacuum forming machine used to start the vacuum and help force the plastic onto the mold.
Reverse lever
A control that gives a short reverse burst of air to release the mold from the formed plastic.
Toggle clamps
Components used to hold the plastic sheets firmly in place when heating and forming.
Platen
The platform inside the vacuum forming machine where the mold sits.
Heater
The element that is pulled over the plastic sheet to increase its temperature.
Heat controls
Knobs used to adjust the amount of heat to match the size and thickness of the plastic sheets.
Platen lift
The mechanism that lowers and raises the platen platform.
Tapered
The requirement that the sides of a mold must be angled at least 5∘ to ensure release from the plastic.
Five degrees
The minimum angle (5∘) required for tapered mold sides to ensure the mold can be released from underneath the plastic.
Vent holes
Small holes drilled from a mold's cavity to its bottom to help pull plastic into corners where the original vacuum will not reach.
Cavities
Depressed areas in a mold that require vent holes for proper vacuum forming.
Wrinkle
The second step in the heating process occurring after the plastic becomes very hot but before it sags.
Sag
The final step of the heating process indicating that the plastic is ready to be formed.
Heating knobs
The specific controls turned on to heat the plastic sheet, which can be adjusted for thickness and size.
Manufacturing method
A category of processes used to create products; vacuum forming is one such method for hollow plastic items.
Hollow plastic products
The primary type of goods created using the vacuum forming manufacturing method.
Reverse burst of air
A quick discharge of air triggered by the reverse lever to separate the mold and plastic.
Thirty seconds
The time interval at which the heater should be pulled back to check the readiness of the plastic sheet.
Lightly tap
The manual action used to check if the plastic is ready when it becomes easy to press and bounces back slightly.
PlatinumLift
The specific name used in the transcript for the mechanism that raises the mold until it locks in place.
Sharp knife
The tool used at the end of the process to cut the excess plastic from the mold.
Cutting board
The surface used to protect workspace when removing excess plastic with a knife.
Soft and flexible
The definition provided for the term 'malleable' in the context of heating plastic.
Smooth and rounded
The required finish for mold edges to ensure proper results and easy release.
Platen platform
The surface that the mold must be placed onto and then lowered as part of the initial process setup.
Heated from above
The direction from which heat is applied to the thermoplastic sheet at the start of the process.
Raised into the plastic
The movement the mold makes from below once the plastic has become malleable.
Vacuumed out from below
The process of removing air to force the malleable plastic onto the mold.
Take the shape of the mold
The final result of the plastic being forced onto the mold by the vacuum.
Mold release
The assurance that the mold can be removed from underneath the plastic, facilitated by smooth edges and tapered sides.
Air escape
Something that must be prevented by clamping the plastic sheet tightly with no gaps around the edges.
Heating steps
The three-step sequence the plastic follows: becoming very hot, wrinkling, and finally sagging.
Cooling down
The necessary stage after separating the mold and plastic because the material will still be very hot.
Toggle clamp release
The final step before turning the machine off to remove the molds from the vacuum former.
Excess plastic
The leftover material that must be carefully trimmed from the mold using a knife and cutting board.
