Landfill
A method for waste disposal where trash is buried there. The hole is covered with plastic liner to prevent leachate from leaking and excess methane is used to produce energy.
Leachate
Contaminated water from passing through landfill which can pollute waterways through percolation.
Incineration
Incinerators are used to burn waste at high temperatures, generating heat which can be used to make energy. However pollutes air with toxic chemicals.
Anaerobic digestion
When biodegradable matter is broken down by microorganisms in the absence of oxygen.
Carrying capacity
The maximum number of a species that can be sustainably supported by a given area.
Ecological footprint
A model used to show the area of land and water required to support a defined human population at a given standard of living.
