Parenteral

exposure is the exposure to blood or other infectious materials that result from piercing or puncturing the skin barrier, such as a needlestick injury.

Convalescence

Your patient is in the period of recovery or convelescence.

Prodromal

stage of disease describes a patient who is visibly sick and is showing symptoms of the disease.

Incubation

period of the disease, the patient has come in contact with the infectious agent but is showing no symptoms of the disease

Acute

A patient at the height of an illness is in the acute stage of the disease.

Droplet

contact when contaminated tissue is touched.

Indirect contact

involves touching a contaminated item.

noncritical

An instrument that does not contact mucous membranes is considered a noncritical instrument.

critical

An instrument that contacts mucous membranes and penetrates soft tissue or bone is considered a critical instrument.

semicritical

An instrument that contacts mucous membranes but does not penetrate soft tissue or bone is considered a semicritical instrument.

Focusing cup

keeps electrons suspended in an electron cloud at the cathode.

Transformer

alters the voltage of incoming electrical current.

Lead collimator

is a metal disk that limits the size of the x-ray beam.

Aluminum filter

is located in the PID and removes the longer nonpenetrating wavelength x-rays from the beam.

occurs when an atom gains or loses an electron.

size 1 receptor

Is used to examine anterior teeth in adults.

size 0 receptor

Is the smallest receptor and is used to examine posterior teeth in small children.

size 2 receptor

Is used to examine permanent molars and premolars.

size 3 receptor

Is longer and narrower and is used for bitewing images on an adult.

Focal trough

is the image layer of a panoramic machine; structures in the middle will be sharply depicted.
