Pharmacy

Agronomy
A branch of plant science dealing with field crop production and soil management, focusing on improving the yield and quality of food and fiber crops.
Carpology
A branch of botany that studies the structure, classification, development, and evolutionary significance of fruits and seeds.
Economic Botany
The branch of plant science dealing with the study of plants of economic importance, such as food, fiber, fuel, timber, dyes, and spices.
Ethnobotany
The study of the botanical knowledge of a social group and its use of locally available plants in foods.
Forestry
The science, art, and craft of creating, managing, using, conserving, and repairing forests and associated resources to meet desired goals, needs, and values for human benefit.
Histology
The study of the microscopic anatomy of cells and tissues of plants and animals, performed by sectioning, staining, and examining under a light microscope or electron microscope.
Paleobotany
A branch of botany dealing with fossil plants, including the study and classification of plants of the geological past and their relationships with extant plants.
Palynology
The scientific study of living and fossilized spores and pollen, which helps improve knowledge of past and present ecosystems.
Phytochemistry
The study of the chemistry of plants, plant products, and processes taking place within plants.
Phytogenesis
The branch of botany concerned with the origin and evolution of plants.
Phytography
The branch of botany that deals with the detailed description of plants.
Phytosociology
The branch of ecology that deals with the characteristics, classification, relationships, and distribution of plant communities.
Phytotomy
Also called Plant Anatomy; the study of the internal structure of plants at the cellular level, often involving tissue sectioning and microscopy.
Phytomorphology
Also called Plant Morphology; the study of the physical form, development, and external structure of plants useful in visual identification.
Plant Cell Biology
Also called Plant Cytology; the scientific discipline studying plant cells, including their physiological properties, structure, organelles, environmental interactions, life cycle, division, and death.
Plant Ecology
The scientific study of interactions among organisms and their environment, such as interactions with each other and their abiotic environment.
Plant Genetics
The branch of genetics that studies heredity and variation in higher plants.
Plant Pathology
The study of disease in plants, integrating many biological disciplines and bridging basic and applied sciences.
Plant Physiology
A subdiscipline of botany concerned with the functioning, or physiology, of plants.
Plant Taxonomy
Also called Plant Systematics; the science that finds, identifies, describes, classifies, and names plants.
Scientific Method
The backbone to every science experiment; a methodical framework to solve problems and determine answers in a step-by-step logical format.
Independent Variable
The variable in an experiment that is controlled or manipulated by the experimenter.
Dependent Variable
The variable in an experiment that is measured or monitored by the experimenter.
Control Group
The group in an experiment that is not exposed to the independent variable.
Theory of Abiogenesis
Also known as Spontaneous Generation Theory; proposed by Anaximander (611-541 B.C.) and Aristotle (384322 B.C.), stating that life originates spontaneously from non-living matter.
Theory of Biogenesis
Proven by Louis Pasteur in 1862, this theory rejects abiogenesis and states that new life arises only from pre-existing life.
Omne vivum ex vivo
Latin phrase meaning 'all life [is] from life'.
Omnis cellula e cellula
Latin phrase meaning 'all cells [are] from cells'.
Interplanetary Theory
Also known as Cosmozoic Theory; proposed by Richter in 1865 and supported by Arrhenius, stating that life reached Earth from other planets in the form of resistant spores.
Marine Theory
The theory stating that life originated from the sea; supported by Aristotle, who identified various marine species and is referred to as the father of marine biology.
Divine Creation Theory
Proposed by Spanish monk Father Suarez, stating that life originated on Earth from a supernatural force of God in six days in the same form as it exists today.
Theophrastus
A scholar, botanist, biologist, and physicist known as the 'father of botany' who wrote Enquiry into Plants and On the Causes of Plants.
