Parallel steps forming the straight portion of a flight of stairs.
Geometrical Stair
A staircase with flights supported by the wall at the ends of the steps, often without a central newel.
Half Space
The open space or interval between two adjacent flights of stairs.
Handrail
A sloping rail running parallel to the staircase that provides support and connects to the balusters.
Hollow Newel

Housing
The notches in the stringboard of a stair designed to receive and support the treads and risers.
Knee
The convex bend located at the back of a handrail.
Landing
A horizontal platform that serves as a resting place between flights of stairs.
Newel
The central post or column around which the steps of a circular staircase wind.
Nosing
The projecting front edge of a tread that extends beyond the riser.
Pitching Piece
A horizontal member wedged into the wall at the top of a stair flight that supports the upper end of the rough stringer.
Pitch
The angle of inclination of a staircase measured from the horizontal.
Ramp
A sloping surface that rises continuously and may twist without the use of steps.
Rise
The vertical height between successive treads or the total vertical height from one landing to another.
Riser
