Engineering Drawing
A technical drawing and graphical language used to clearly and concisely convey all information necessary to transform an idea into reality, including dimensions, geometry, tolerances, material types, finishes, and specifications.
Gaspard Monge
A French Military engineer who created Orthographic Projection to enable standard global communication of three-dimensional objects.
Orthographic Projection
A system of drawing where an object is viewed from multiple directions (top, front, and side) projected out to 2D viewing planes to represent a 3D object.
Tolerance
The allowable variations specified for each dimension on an engineering drawing.
Finish
The specification on an engineering drawing defining the surface quality of an item, whether functional or cosmetic.
Line Drawing
A drawing constructed entirely of narrow lines of simple geometric shapes, using variations in line density and width to create shadow and tone effects.
Pictorial Drawing
A drawing showing an object as it would appear in a photograph or to an observer from a specific viewpoint, including perspective, isometric, and oblique styles.
Perspective Drawing
A pictorial drawing that represents an object as it appears to the eye, featuring receding lines that converge at one or more vanishing points.
Vanishing Point (V.P.)
A distant point in a perspective drawing where parallel receding lines appear to converge.
Pirate's Eye View
A two-point or angular perspective drawing where the observer is assumed to be at a station directly in front of the object.
Bird's Eye View
A two-point perspective drawing where the observer is assumed to be at a station positioned above the object.
Worm's Eye View
A two-point perspective drawing where the observer station is positioned low, placing the ground line and horizon on the same plane.
Three-point Perspective
A drawing technique utilizing three vanishing points (two on the horizon line and one above or below it) to depict depth and three-dimensionality.
Isometric Drawing
A pictorial drawing in which horizontal lines recede at 30∙ to the left and 30∙ to the right, maintaining parallel receding lines across three axes separated by 120∙.
Isometric Coordinate Axes
The set of three axes in an isometric drawing—a vertical line, a line 30∙ to the left, and a line 30∙ to the right—from which measurements are made.
Oblique Drawing
A pictorial drawing where the front view of the object is drawn true to size without distortion, and side surfaces recede at parallel angles (commonly 30∙, 45∙, or 60∙).
Working Drawing
A drawing containing two or more views along with precise specifications on size, shape, materials, fabrication techniques, hardware, and surface treatments necessary to manufacture a component.
Detail Drawing
A working drawing that provides complete and comprehensive information for a single individual part, including shape, exact dimensions with tolerances, material, grade of finish, and quantity.
Assembly Drawing
A working drawing showing all component parts of a machine or structure joined together in their operational configuration.
Graphic Language
The visual component of engineering drawing that describes an object's shape using line types, projection methods, and geometric construction.
Word Language
The textual component of engineering drawing that describes the size, location, and specifications of an object through lettering.
Freehand Drawing
A drawing method in which lines are sketched without the assistance of tools other than a pencil and eraser.
Instrument Drawing
A drawing method utilizing specialized tools to construct precise straight lines, circles, and curves to scale.
ANSI
American National Standard Institute; the primary standard code for engineering drawing used in the USA.
JIS
Japanese Industrial Standard; the drawing standard code used in Japan.
BS
British Standard; the drawing standard code used in the United Kingdom.
AS
Australian Standard; the engineering drawing standard code used in Australia.
DIN
Deutsches Institut für Normung; the national standard drawing code used in Germany.
ISO
International Standards Organization; the global standard code commonly practiced in Bangladesh and across the world.
