Class C Driver's License

The standard noncommercial driver's license required for most people to operate regular passenger vehicles on public roads in California.

REAL ID Driver's License

A driver's license or identification card that is federally compliant, required starting May $2025$ to board domestic flights, enter military bases, and enter most federal facilities.

Instruction Permit

A permit required for individuals without a license from California or another state before taking the behind-the-wheel drive test to obtain a driver's license.

Provisional Driver's License

A driver's license issued to individuals under $18\,years$ old that includes specific driving restrictions during the first $12\,months$.

Hand-to-Hand Steering

A steering method where hands start at $9$ and $3\text{ o'clock}$ or $8$ and $4\text{ o'clock}$ and do not cross over the middle of the steering wheel.

Hand-Over-Hand Steering

A steering method used when turning at low speeds, parking, or recovering from a skid, where one hand reaches across the wheel to grasp the opposite side.

One-Hand Steering

A steering technique permitted only when turning while backing up or operating vehicle controls that require removing a hand from the wheel.

Single Solid Yellow Line

A center line marking on a two-way road indicating where passing is prohibited for drivers on the side of the solid line.

Double Solid Yellow Lines

Road markings indicating no passing from either direction, where drivers must stay to the right except when turning left into or out of a driveway or road, or using a designated HOV lane entrance.

Broken Yellow Line

A center line marking indicating that passing is permitted if the broken line is next to the driver's lane and it is safe to pass.

Single Solid White Line

A road surface marking that separates traffic lanes traveling in the same direction, including one-way streets.

Double Solid White Lines

Road markings indicating a lane barrier between a regular lane and a preferential use lane (such as an HOV lane) where changing lanes is prohibited.

Yield Line

A transverse road marking made of solid white triangles pointing toward approaching vehicles to show where to yield or stop.

Number 1 Lane

The far-left or fast lane on a multilane roadway closest to the center divider.

Passing Lane

The far-left lane on a multilane road, located closest to the center divider, used to pass other vehicles.

HOV Lane (High-Occupancy Vehicle Lane)

A designated traffic lane marked with a diamond symbol reserved for carpools, buses, motorcycles, or qualified low-emission vehicles.

Center Left Turn Lane

A lane in the middle of a two-way street, marked by inner broken lines and outer solid lines, used for preparing and making left turns or U-turns for up to $200\,feet$.

Turnout Area

A designated area or lane on a two-lane road used by slow-moving vehicles to pull over and allow five or more following vehicles to pass.

Bike Lane

A designated lane along streets running alongside vehicle traffic marked by a single solid white line (turning dashed near intersections) for exclusive use by bicyclists.

Limit Line

A wide solid white line painted across a lane showing where a vehicle must stop before an intersection or crosswalk.

U-Turn

An action where a driver turns their vehicle around to proceed in the opposite direction from which they came.

Blind Spot

An area around a vehicle that cannot be seen by the driver when looking straight ahead or using interior and exterior mirrors.

Parallel Parking

A parking technique where a vehicle is parked parallel to and within $18\,inches$ of the curb in line with other parked vehicles.

White Curb

A painted curb indicating stopping is allowed only long enough to pick up or drop off passengers.

Green Curb

A painted curb indicating parking is permitted for a limited time specified by posted signs or markings.

Yellow Curb

A painted curb indicating stopping is allowed only to load or unload passengers or freight for no longer than the posted time limit.

Red Curb

A painted curb indicating no stopping, standing, or parking under any circumstances, except for buses in designated bus zones.

Blue Curb

A painted curb designating parking exclusively for disabled persons displaying a special placard or license plate.

Safety Zone

A specially marked area on a roadway designated for pedestrians waiting for buses, streetcars, or trolleys into which vehicles are prohibited from driving.

Lane Splitting

The practice of a motorcyclist riding between lanes of stopped or moving traffic traveling in the same direction.

Basic Speed Law

A California law stating that a driver may never drive faster than is safe for current road and weather conditions.

Blind Intersection

An intersection without stop signs at any corner where the driver's view is obstructed, having a speed limit of $15\,mph$.

Alley

A narrow roadway no wider than $25\,feet$ used to access the rear or side of buildings, with a speed limit of $15\,mph$.

Hydroplaning

A condition in wet weather where a vehicle's tires ride on a film of water rather than making direct contact with the road surface, causing loss of traction.

Traffic Break

A maneuver where law enforcement uses a patrol vehicle with emergency lights to weave across freeway lanes to slow or stop traffic to clear road hazards.

Child Passenger Restraint System

A federally approved safety seat or booster seat required to secure infant and child passengers based on age, weight, and height.

STOP Sign

An octagonal red traffic sign instructing drivers to make a full stop before the crosswalk or limit line before entering an intersection.

Traffic Citation

An official summons or ticket issued by law enforcement for violating a traffic law.

Traffic Violator School

A course a driver may be permitted to complete following a one-point traffic violation to prevent the citation from being reported to their insurance company.

Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC)

A measurement of the percentage or amount of alcohol present in an individual's bloodstream.

Administrative Per Se

A California law requiring the DMV to automatically suspend or revoke a driver's license if arrested for driving under the influence or if the driver refuses a chemical test.

Ignition Interlock Device (IID)

A breathalyzer mechanism installed in a vehicle that prevents the engine from starting if alcohol is detected on the driver's breath.

Hit-and-Run

The illegal act of failing to stop or leaving the scene of a vehicle collision in which you are involved.

Three-Second Rule

A method used by drivers to measure and maintain a safe following distance behind another vehicle under normal driving conditions.

Yield

To slow down, wait, and be prepared to stop if necessary to allow other vehicles or pedestrians with the right-of-way to proceed.

Vulnerable Road Users (VRU)

Non-motorized road users, including bicyclists, pedestrians, and individuals with disabilities using wheelchairs, tricycles, or quadricycles.
