Two traditional metaphors

Sa chéad véarsa, seasann ‘nead a chine’ don teach nó don cheantar ina tógadh an fear

In the first line, ‘nead a chine’ (homeplace) represents the house or area where the man was raised

Meafar traidisiúnta eile is ea ‘leac a thine’

Another traditional metaphor is ‘leac a thine’ (by the fire)

Tá macalla den seanfhocal níl aon tinteán mar do thinteán féin sa mheafar seo

This metaphor echoes the proverb ‘there’s nowhere like home’

Is é an meafar sa dara véarsa "is taobh den bhríste" an meafar is fearr liom

the metaphor in the second verse "half of the trousers" is my favourite metaphor

Dar leí, ní sroicfidh sí barr a cumais ag obair mar bhean an t

According to her, she will not reach her full potential working as a housewife

Is cinnte go bhfuil sí ag iarraidh leath den údáras

She certainly desires half of the authority

Níor mhaith léi a bheith ag brath ar a fear

She didn’t want to depend on her husband
