US Constitution Amendments

First Amendment

Protects freedoms of speech, religion, press, assembly, and petition.

Second Amendment

Protects the right to keep and bear arms.

Third Amendment

Prohibits the quartering of soldiers in private homes without the owner's consent during peacetime.

Fourth Amendment

Protects against unreasonable searches and seizures, requiring a warrant based on probable cause.

Fifth Amendment

Provides the right to due process, protects against self-incrimination and double jeopardy.

Sixth Amendment

Guarantees the right to a fair trial, including the right to a speedy trial, an impartial jury, and legal counsel. (It also ensures the accused can confront witnesses and obtain witnesses in their favor)

Seventh Amendment

Ensures the right to a jury trial in civil cases and prohibits re-examination of facts tried by a jury.

Eighth Amendment

Prohibits excessive bail and cruel and unusual punishment.

Ninth Amendment

Affirms the rights of individuals that are not specifically enumerated in the Constitution, ensuring that the absence of certain rights does not imply the denial of others.

Tenth Amendment

Reinforces the principle of federalism by stating that powers not delegated to the federal government are reserved for the states or the people.

11th Amendment

Limits the ability of individuals to sue states in federal court without the state's consent. This amendment protects states from certain legal liabilities and promotes sovereign immunity.

12th Amendment

Revises the electoral process for electing the President and Vice President, allowing voters to cast separate ballots for each office.

13th Amendment

Abolishes slavery and involuntary servitude in the United States, except as punishment for a crime.

14th Amendment

Grants citizenship and equal protection under the law to all persons born or naturalized in the U.S.

15th Amendment

Prohibits denying the right to vote based on race, color, or previous condition of servitude.

16th Amendment

Allows Congress to levy an income tax without apportioning it among the states.

17th Amendment

Establishes the direct election of U.S. Senators by popular vote.

18th Amendment

Prohibits the manufacture, sale, and transportation of alcoholic beverages.

19th Amendment

Grants women the right to vote.

20th Amendment

Limits the terms of the President and Congress, establishing new start dates. limits them to four years for the President and two years for the House of Representatives.

21st Amendment

Repeals the 18th Amendment, allowing the manufacture and sale of alcohol.

22nd Amendment

Limits the President to two terms in office.

23rd Amendment

Grants Washington D.C. electoral votes for President. They get three electoral votes.

24th Amendment

Prohibits poll taxes in federal elections.

25th Amendment

Addresses presidential succession and disability. The amendment outlines procedures for replacing the President in case of death, removal, or incapacitation. The VP assumes the presidency and sets rules for filling a vacancy in the office of the Vice President.

26th Amendment

Lowers the voting age to 18 years.

27th Amendment

Limits congressional pay increases until after the next election.
