HUMANUS
A Latin word meaning human, refined, and cultured.
Medieval humanities
A period in the 12th and 13th century centered on philosophy and theology with an interest in the concept of eternal.
Renaissance humanities
A period from the 14th to the 18th century that asserted the intrinsic value of man's life on earth and included disciplines such as languages, literature, fine arts, music, and philosophy.
19th Century humanities
A period where science ruled and humanities took a back stage.
Modern humanities
Humanities as they exist today, emphasizing modern literature and the critical and historical study of fine arts and music with a focus on serving man as an individual rather than a social being.
Disciplines of humanities
Fields including philosophy, ethics, jurisprudence, language, linguistics, literary studies, art, and art history.
Study of humanities
The study of human culture and the human condition, including the thoughts, beliefs, values, and feelings of man.
ARS
A Latin word meaning ability or skill.
ART
Any human activity that expresses aesthetic ideas by the use of skill and imagination in the creation of objects, environments, and experiences shared to create an aesthetic experience for the viewer.
ARTIST
A person who uses skills/ability and imagination in the creation of his work.
ARTWORK
An activity that involves skill/ability and imagination in accomplishing it.
