•Neoplasm

•Any new growth of new tissue

•Either benign or malignant

What is a Benign Hepatic Tumor?

•Growth occurs locally but does not spread or invade surrounding structures

•May push on them or adhere to them

What is a Malignant Hepatic Tumor?

•Growth of mass is uncontrolled & will spread or metastasize to nearby or distant structures thru the bloodstream or lymph nodes

Cavernous Hemangioma is the:

•Most common benign liver lesion

What are the sonographic features of a Cavernous Hemangioma?

-Echogenic

-Homogenous

-Posterior enhancement

-Round or oval

-Well-defined borders

-Larger masses may show necrosis, degeneration, calcification

What does an atypical hemangioma look like sonographically?

-Hyperechoic periphery

-Hypoechoic central core

-“Reverse” target pattern

May transform into HCC

-Rounded

-Well encapsulated

-Solitary but may be multiple

What is a Hepatic Cystadenoma?

Rare neoplasm which contains cystic structures within the lesion

Middle-aged women

A Hepatic Cystadenoma is described how:

•Premalignant potential

•Palpable abdominal mass

What does a Hepatic Cystadenoma look like on an ultrasound?

Multilocular lesions with mucinous fluid

Benign Hepatic Masses include:

• Cavernous Hemangioma

• Focal Nodular Hyperplasia

• Adenoma
