What is flushing?
increasing energy intake around breeding
How is energy intake restricted?
individually feed- no competition and feed to individual pig’s needs, feed high fiber- low energy diet, feed compounds that dec appetite- 3.5% CaCl, feed every 3 days- gilts 24hrs and sows 8hrs separately
What are the benefits and considerations of feeding fat to pigs?
Benefits: inc baby pig liver glycogen, inc fat content of colostrum, inc carcass fat at birth for baby pig, improves baby pig’s survival; Considerations: expensive, little effect on liter size at birth, birth wts, or weaning wts, and inc survivability based on management
How should boars be nutritionally managed during the non -breeding season?
decrease energy intake, add fiber, or restrict intake
When should flushing occur in gilts and what are the benefits?
10 days before breeding and stop immediately after breeding; Benefits: improved health, increased ovulation rate, and increase of live embryos
Describe how gilts should be managed prior to gestation and during breeding
Replacement gilts can be fed with market hogs until 200lbs. Then they are separated and energy intake is restricted to 60-70% free choice which allows for normal growth but dec fat deposition.
10 days before breeding, flushing should occur and be immediately stopped after breeding for improved health, inc ovulation rate, and inc in live embryos
What are the limiting amino acids for swine?
lysine, threonine, methionine, tryptophan
When and why is starter feed fed?
3rd-6th week of age and it should be used as a creep ration. It helps kickstart amylase production.
When and why would fat be added to a sows diet?
Add it 0-10 days before farrowing and 0-21 days after. Their energy requirements are higher when producing milk
Since 10-15% added fat is optimal, why isn’t it used?
Less fat (6-8%) is used because fat causes feed deterioration (less storage time) and is expensive
