Somatic sensory pathways
Carry sensory information from skin and muscles to the CNS.
Spinothalamic pathway
Responsible for conscious sensation of pain, temperature, and crude touch.
1st order neurons
Neurons that synapse with 2nd order neurons in the posterior horn.
Decussate
The process by which neurons cross from one side of the CNS to the other.
Posterior column pathway
Carries sensations of fine touch, pressure, vibration, and proprioception.
Dorsal column medial lemniscus (DCML) pathway
Ascends on the same side to the medulla before decussating.
Primary somatosensory cortex
The final destination of the sensory pathways for processing sensory information.
Spinocerebellar pathway
Delivers proprioceptive information from muscles, tendons, and joints to the cerebellum.
Proprioception
The body's ability to sense its position and movement.
Conscious awareness of sensations
Refers to whether we are aware of sensory signals such as touch, pain, or pressure.
