Wave pulse
A single disturbance that moves through a medium.
Wavelength
The distance between two consecutive crests or troughs in a wave.
Frequency
The number of waves that pass a given point per second.
Compression
The region of a longitudinal wave where the particles are closest together.
Rarefaction
The region of a longitudinal wave where the particles are furthest apart.
Crest
The highest point of a wave.
Trough
The lowest point of a wave.
Longitudinal Wave
A wave in which the particle displacement is parallel to the direction of wave propagation.
Transverse Wave
A wave in which the particle displacement is perpendicular to the direction of wave propagation.
Amplitude
The maximum displacement of points on a wave from the equilibrium position.
Pulse width
The duration of time that a pulse lasts.
Equilibrium Position
The position of the medium where it would be if no wave were present.
Propagation
The movement of waves through a medium.
Medium
The substance through which a wave travels.
