Score Point 4
Reflects a thorough knowledge and understanding of the subject matter; the purpose is fully achieved, supporting evidence is sound, and examples are high-quality and relevant.
Score Point 3
Reflects an adequate knowledge and understanding of the subject matter; the purpose is largely achieved, with generally accurate application and adequate supporting examples.
Score Point 2
Reflects a limited knowledge and understanding of the subject matter; the purpose is partially achieved, with limited supporting evidence and examples.
Score Point 1
Reflects a weak knowledge and understanding of the subject matter; the purpose is not achieved, with little to no accurate application or relevant supporting evidence.
Score Point U
Assigned when the response is unrelated, illegible, off-topic, or insufficient in length to score.
Score Point B
Assigned when no response to the assignment is provided.
Phoneme Blending
The skill of combining individual sounds into a word, such as blending /s//a//t/ into "sat."
Phoneme Segmentation
The skill of breaking a word into its individual sounds, such as segmenting "ship" into /sh//i//p/.
Phoneme Manipulation
An advanced phonemic awareness skill involving the substitution of sounds in words, such as changing the /p/ in "pat" to a /k/ to make "kat."
Elkonin Boxes
A strategy using concrete representations (like chips or counters) to help students visualize sounds in words, useful for addressing needs in blending and segmentation.
Morphological Awareness
The ability to identify and analyze word parts, including root words, prefixes, and suffixes (e.g., identifying "un-" as the prefix in "undo").
Morphology Table
An instructional tool used to help students deconstruct multisyllabic words into roots and derivational morphemes to understand meaning and grammatical function.
WCPM
Acronym for Words Correct Per Minute, a measure used to calculate oral reading fluency.
Prosody
A dimension of reading fluency that includes smoothness and phrasing, often scored on a scale of 1–4.
Word Sorts
An activity where students categorize vocabulary terms into groups (e.g., "movement words" vs. "human group words") to clarify meanings and see connections between words.
Literal Comprehension
The ability to accurately retrieve facts or details that are explicitly stated directly in the text.
Inferential Comprehension
A complex reading skill requiring students to understand text beyond surface-level details and make logical conclusions based on context clues.
Evaluative Comprehension
The ability to use critical thinking to analyze information and draw on evidence or examples from the text to form an assessment.
QAR Strategy
Question-Answer Relationship approach that classifies questions into four types: Right There, Think and Search, Author and You, and On My Own.
Call-and-Response Activity
A strategy where a teacher models the process of substituting a phoneme and the student follows along by repeating and applying the substitution.
CVCe Pattern
A phonics pattern where a silent "e" modifies a vowel to make a long sound, such as in the words "wave" or "rope."
Repeated Reading
An instructional strategy where a student reads the same short passage multiple times to build automaticity, confidence, and fluency rate.
Interactive Word Wall
A vocabulary development tool featuring words, definitions, and images where students collaboratively add textural examples to reinforce academic language comprehension.
Read-Aloud Think-Aloud
An instructional strategy where the teacher pauses during reading to verbalize their thought process, helping students develop inferential thinking skills.
