Size 4 Image Receptor
An intraoral image receptor used exclusively for occlusal radiographs of adult patients.
Size 3 Image Receptor
An intraoral image receptor used exclusively for horizontal bitewing radiographs of adult patients.
Intraoral Image Receptor Sizes 0, 1, and 2
Receptor sizes used individually or in combination for bitewing and periapical radiographs of adults, adolescents, and children.
Full Mouth Series (Full Mouth Survey)
A complete collection of periapical and bitewing radiographs that image all of the teeth in the oral cavity.
Standard Adult Full Mouth Survey Composition
A radiographic collection consisting of a minimum of 4 bitewing radiographs and 14 periapical radiographs.
Bitewing Survey for Periodontally Involved Patients
A complete set of 7 or 8 vertical bitewing radiographs, which includes both posterior and anterior bitewings.
General Rule for Anterior Receptor Selection
The practice of using the largest image receptor that can readily be positioned in order to minimize the total number of exposures.
Size 1 Image Receptor in Anterior Region
A narrower image receptor often used instead of size 2 to fit narrow oral regions better, though it may require additional exposures to record the region.
Standard Image Receptor Selection for Posterior Periapicals
The standard use of eight size 2 image receptors for posterior periapical exposures in an adult patient.
Placement for Maxillary Central Incisors (Size 1 or 2)
Center the image receptor behind the central and lateral incisors; if using size 2 film, include the mesial halves of the canines.
Placement for Maxillary Lateral Incisor (Size 1)
Center the image receptor behind the lateral incisor to include the distal half of the central incisor and the mesial half of the canine.
Placement for Canine Radiograph (Size 1 or 2)
Center the image receptor behind the canine to include the distal half of the lateral incisor and the mesial half of the first premolar.
Placement for Premolar Radiographs (Size 2)
Align the anterior edge of the size 2 receptor behind the distal half of the canine to include the entire first and second premolars and the mesial half of the first molar.
Placement for Molar Radiographs (Size 2)
Align the anterior edge of the size 2 receptor behind the distal half of the second premolar to include the entire first, second, and third molars.
Anterior Image Receptor Orientation
Placement of the image receptor with its longer dimension oriented vertically.
Posterior Image Receptor Orientation
Placement of the image receptor with its longer dimension oriented horizontally.
