Patient Masking and Positioning

Assisting the patient into position, having the patient turn their head away from the insertion site, and placing a mask on the patient prior to beginning the procedure.

Opening a Sterile Package

Opening the sterile package away from you first, then to each side, and finally toward you without reaching over or contaminating the sterile field.

Removing Old Dressing

Removing the dressing without dislodging the catheter by pulling the dressing toward the insertion site.

Chlorhexidine Swab Application

Cleansing the insertion site and the catheter under the dressing using a back-and-forth motion with a chlorhexidine swab, then allowing it to dry completely.

Skin Prep

An agent applied to the outer edge of the insertion area where the transparent dressing will be applied.

Dressing Labeling

Marking the newly applied transparent dressing with the date, time of change, and the nurse's initials.

Sterile Technique Principles

Strict aseptic practices including keeping sterile hands above waist height, keeping the sterile field height above the waist, never turning your back to the sterile field, and avoiding reaching over the sterile field.
