Perspectives of Physical Education
Old Perspective: Historically viewed as the education of the human body, where a muscular physique was the hallmark of a physically educated individual. Activities were termed "drill, physical training, and calisthenics," focusing primarily on muscle strength.
Contemporary Perspective: Defined as the planned, progressive learning that takes place within the school curriculum timetabled time, delivered to all pupils.
Why Study Physical Education
It is a vital component of the educational program aimed at fostering optimal physical, social, emotional, and mental development through well-chosen activities.
It focuses on teaching skills and attitudes through play activities—described as "education through physical exertion".
Legal Bases for Teaching P.E. in the Philippines
1987 Philippine Constitution (Article XIV, Section 19, Paragraphs 1 & 2): Mandates that the state promote sports programs, league competitions, and amateur sports to foster self-discipline, teamwork, and excellence. All educational institutions are required to undertake regular sports activities.
Republic Act No. 5708 (June 21, 1969): The "School Physical Education and Sports Development Act of 1969," providing for health/nutrition education, physical fitness, competitive athletics, intramurals, and regional athletic competitions.
UNESCO International Charter of Physical Education, Physical Activity and Sport: Emphasizes state-promoted sports and regular physical activities across educational institutions to develop a healthy citizenry.
CHED Memorandum Order No. 39, Series of 2021 (CMO 39, s. 2021): Guidelines for Tertiary Physical Education: PATHFIT (Physical Activity Towards Health and Fitness) Courses, aligned with R.A. 7722.
Historical Milestones in Philippine P.E.
1901: Physical exercise introduced in public schools with a regular athletics program.
1920: Physical Education became a required subject in all public school curricula.
1937: Made a curricular subject in secondary education.
1969: Enactment of R.A. 5708.
1982: MAPE (Music, Arts, and Physical Education) introduced.
