What does NIC stand for?
Network interface card
What is an OSI connection?
Open system interconnection
What is the OSI model?
A depiction for how computers interface with eachother in networked environments
What are the software layers of the OSI model?
5-7, Session(5), Presentation (6), Application(7)
What is the session layer
Manages communication with other endpoints such as retransmission. Ex. sockets, point to point tunnelling, RPC
What is the presentation layer
Translates between the application and session layers; encoding; compresssion; cryptography. Examples include TLS and SSL
What is the application layer?
High level APIS such as HTTP, SMTP, FTP
What does SSL stand for
Secure sockets layer
What does smtp stand for
Simple mail transfer protocol
What does rpc stand for
remote procedure protocol
What are the hardware layers of the OSI model
1-3, Physical(1), Data Link(2), Network(3)
What is the physical layer of the osi model?
Layer 1 Conversion from raw bits to whatever is appropriate for the medium. Ex. CPU, ram, gpu, motherboard, ssd, hdd etc
What is the data link layer of the osi model
Layer 2 Reliable data frame transmission between endpoints from a physical point of view. Ex. Ethernet and wifi
What is the network layer in the osi model?
Layer 3 Addressing, traffic control, routing. Ex IPV4, IPV6. Includes devices like routers and switches.W
What is the transport layer
Layer 4 Ensure reliable transmission of data segments between endpoints. Includes TCP and UDP
What are the three types of buses
Peripheral component interface, PCIeXtended, and PciExpress
What does ASIC stand for?
Application specific integrated circuit
What are ingress and egress
Incoming and outgoing network traffic.
What does fpga stand for
Field programmable gate array
