pH
Minus log of the concentration of H₃O⁺ in solution.
pOH
Minus log of the concentration of OH⁻ in solution.
Acidic
A solution with a pH less than 7.
Neutral
A solution with a pH of approximately 7.
Basic
A solution with a pH greater than 7.
Strong Acids
Acids that dissociate completely in water such as hydrochloric, hydrobromic, hydroiodic, sulfuric, nitric, and perchloric acid.
Strong Bases
Bases that dissociate completely in water, typically alkali metal hydroxides and some alkaline earth metals.
Conjugate Acid
The species formed when a base gains a hydrogen ion.
Conjugate Base
The species formed when an acid donates a hydrogen ion.
Tug of War Analogy
A way to compare the strength of acids and bases: the stronger one 'wins' in neutralization reactions.
Measurement Error
The concept that all measurements have some level of error, regardless of the device used.
