Histology
The study of tissues and cells under a microscope.
Histopathology
The diagnosis and study of diseases of the tissues, involving examination under a microscope.
Four basic tissue types
Epithelial tissue, connective tissue, muscle tissue, nervous tissue.
Epithelial Tissue
A type of tissue classified by cell shape: squamous, cuboidal, and columnar, with functions including protection, absorption, and secretion.
Squamous Epithelium
Epithelial cells that are wider than they are tall.
Cuboidal Epithelium
Epithelial cells whose height and width are approximately the same.
Columnar Epithelium
Epithelial cells that are taller than they are wide.
Stratified Squamous Epithelium
A type of epithelium with protective functions, typically found in the outer layer of skin.
Transitional Epithelium
Cells that change shape when stretched, found in the urinary tract.
Pseudostratified Columnar Epithelium
Epithelial tissue that appears to have multiple layers due to varying cell heights but is actually a single layer.
Cardiac Muscle
Involuntary, striated muscle found in the heart, responsible for pumping blood.
Skeletal Muscle
Voluntary, striated muscle attached to bones, enabling conscious movement.
Smooth Muscle
Involuntary, non-striated muscle found in internal organs, controlling functions like propulsion of substances.
Connective Tissue
Supports, binds, and connects other tissues and organs with various types, including bone and adipose.
Loose Connective Tissue
Connective tissue characterized by a loose arrangement of fibers, providing support and cushioning.
Adipose Tissue
Specialized connective tissue that stores fat and provides insulation and cushioning.
Dense Connective Tissue
Tissue that provides strength and support, including ligaments and tendons.
Supporting Connective Tissues
Tissues including bone and cartilage, providing structural support to the body.
Blood
Connective tissue that circulates throughout the body, transporting oxygen, carbon dioxide, and nutrients.
Red Blood Cells (Erythrocytes)
Blood cells responsible for transporting oxygen and carbon dioxide.
White Blood Cells
Cells that are part of the immune system, helping to fight infections.
