General Strain Theory (GST)
A theory that argues strain creates negative emotions that may lead to crime if people cannot cope in healthy ways
Strain
Negative experiences or events that create pressure and emotional distress.
Failure to Achieve Valued Goals
Strain caused by not achieving goals or expectations that are important to you
Loss of Positive Stimuli
Strain caused by losing something valued, such as a relationship or family member
Exposure to Negative (Noxious) Stimuli
Strain caused by ongoing negative experiences such as bullying, abuse or family conflict
Negative Emotions
Emotions such as anger and frustration that increase the pressure to respond to strain.
Coping
The strategies people use to respond to strain and negative emotions
Delinquent Coping
Using offending or deviant behaviour to deal with strain and negative emotions
Social Bond vs General Strain
Social Bond: Weak bonds increase crime.
General Strain: Negative emotions increase crime.
