What is Calcitonin?

secreted by thyroid gland moves calcium from blood into bone

  • inhibits bone resorption by decreasing osteoclastic activity

  • if hypercalemia —> calcatonin increased

2
New cards

What is Parathyroid Hormone?

secreted by parathyroid gland moves calcium from bone to blood

  • stimulates bone resorption by increasing osteoclastic activity

  • if hypocalemia —> PTH increased

3
New cards

What is osteoporosis?

general term meaning pathologically “porous bone.”

  • resorption(PTH) will increase due to increased osteoclastic activity - break down bone

  • this causes bone density to decrease, and bone becomes more porous

4
New cards

What is Osteopenia?

the condition of having somewhat less than normal bone density

5
New cards

What are the treatments of osteoporosis?

once osteopenia is identified by a bone density study, medications may be prescribed to decrease osteoclastic activity,

  • such as nasal calcitonin and biphosphonates(Fosamax)

6
New cards

What are the Electrical issues regarding calcium?

hypo or hypercalcemia can affect Na+ movement in and out of cells, thus affecting RMP

7
New cards

What are the Clotting issues regarding calcium?

low calcium = low clotting ability(hypocalcemia)

  • a patient might have easy bleeding, manifested as petechiae and purpura.

8
New cards

What are the Urological issues regarding calcium?

hypercalcemia can cause kidney stones

9
New cards

What causes Hypocalcemia?

  • Hypoparathyroidism

  • Calcitonin Hypersecretion

10
New cards

What causes Hypercalcemia?

  • Hyperparathyroidism

  • Calcitonin Hyposecretion
