Central Nervous System Depressants
Substances that depress the central nervous system, like alcohol, leading to relaxation and loss of inhibitions.
Alcohol Intoxication Symptoms
Slurred speech, unsteady gait, lack of coordination, impaired attention, concentration, memory, and judgment.
Alcohol Overdose
Excessive alcohol intake leading to vomiting, unconsciousness, respiratory depression, aspiration pneumonia, cardiovascular shock, and potentially death.
Alcohol Overdose Treatment
Gastric lavage or dialysis to remove the drug, and support of respiratory and cardiovascular functioning.
Poly substance abuse
Abuse of more than one substance.
Intoxication
Use of a substance that results in adaptive behavior.
Withdrawal symptoms
Negative psychological and physical reactions that occur when use of a substance ceases or dramatically decreases.
Detoxification
The process of safely withdrawing from a substance.
Blackout
Episode during which the person continues to function but has no conscious awareness of their behavior or memory of it later, usually associated with alcohol consumption.
Tolerance
The need for an increased amount of a substance to produce the same effect.
Tolerance break
A state where a small amount of a substance will produce intoxication.
Spontaneous remission
Natural recovery that occurs without treatment of any kind.
Gambling Disorder
A non-substance related disorder characterized by gambling, getting money from others, and an inability to refrain from gambling.
Substance induced anxiety
Substances that are similar to other mental illness diagnoses, such as anxiety psychosis, or mood disorders
Opioids
Compounds that desensitize the user to both physiological and psychological pain and induce a sense of euphoria and well being. Examples include morphine, codeine, and heroin.
Hallucinogens
Substances that distort the user's perception of reality and produce symptoms similar to psychosis, including hallucinations and depersonalization.
Inhalants
A diverse group of drugs that include anesthetics, nitrates, and organic solvents that are inhaled for their effects.
Sedatives-Hypnotics & Anxiolytics
CNS Depressants such as Barbiturates, non-barbiturate hypnotics, anxiolytics and Benzodiazepines
Activated Charcoal
Charcoal processed using heat or chemicals to make it highly porous; to treat poisoning and overdoses
