- Add Br2 Solution
- Red-orange colour rapidly decolourises
- Addition Reaction occurs

Chemical test for Carboxyl Functional Group

- Add Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate solid (NaHCO3)
- Effervescence (bubbles) occurs as colourless gas is produced
- NaHCO3 (s) + RCOOH (aq) → RCOONa (aq) + CO2 (g) + H2O (l)

Chemical test for Carbon Dioxide

- Bubble carbon dioxide gas through limewater (Ca(OH)2)
- Solution turns cloudy due to precipitation of calcium carbonate
- Ca(OH)2 (aq) + CO2 (g) → CaCO3 (s) + H2O (l)

Chemical test for Hydroxyl Functional Group

- Heat with ethanoic acid and few drops of Sulfuric Acid catalyst, then pour into cold water
- Smell of an ester on the water
