Title IX prohibits sex-based discrimination, including sexual harassment and sexual assault, in education programs that receive federal financial assistance. This could be talking about someone inappropriately, coercion, or assault.

Define Socialization and how it affects how we as a society treat people.

  • Definition: Socialization is the process by which an individual learns to adjust to a group (or society) and behave in a manner approved by the group (or society).

  • It makes us conform to a group mentality, which can negatively affect others who fail to conform to these standards that we have set. It makes it difficult for people to be unique without eventually being ridiculed for doing so.

  • Saying that the victim shouldn’t have done certain things before their assault

    • Ie. “You shouldn’t have been drinking/gone to their apartment”

How can you help a victim of sexual assault?

  • Believe them

  • Let them know that you’re willing to listen to them

  • Help them report their assault to the authorities if they wish to do so

  • Make sure to always keep your drink/food in hand

  • Stick to the buddy system

  • Always inform someone of your whereabouts

What are the five descriptors required for your actions to be considered self defense?

  • Defensive action must be required in order to extract oneself from the situation

  • Defensive actions and subsequent force being used must be objectively reasonable under the circumstances

  • An individual must be protecting themselves from imminent harm or injury, sexual assault, and/or unlawful detention or abduction (NOT WORDS)

  • The force being used in defense must be responding to an ongoing or presently imminent threat

  • An individual has a legal right to protect someone else who is in a situation that meets the requirements listed above
