Week 5 - Authentication

Authentication is

The process of verifying that a claimant controls one or more authenticators with a given digital identity. It does not confirm “true identity”, only that the claimant controls the authenticator.

Claimant:

user or device attempting to authenticate

Authenticator:

something the claimant possesses, knows, or is

Verifier:

the system that checks the authenticator

Assurance:

level of confidence that the claimant is who they claim to be
