Parliament House
The building located on Capital Hill in Canberra where the Australian Parliament meets.
The Senate
The upper house of Parliament, which is composed of 76 Senators.
House of Representatives
The lower house of Parliament where MPs (Members of Parliament) work.
MP
A title that stands for Member of Parliament.
Legislative branch
A branch of government that is bicameral, meaning it consists of two units: the House of Representatives and the Senate.
Executive branch
One of the three main branches of government; the Prime Minister appoints ministers within this branch.
Judiciary
The branch of government (pronounced jew-dish-ee-airy) that includes the federal courts of Australia.
Separation of Powers
The system that divides government responsibilities into the legislative, executive, and judiciary branches.
Bicameral
A term describing a legislative body that has two houses.
