Flexion
Bending a joint, decreasing the angle between two body parts.
Extension
Straightening a joint, increasing the angle between two body parts.
Abduction
Movement of a limb away from the mid line of the body.
Adduction
Movement of a limb toward the midline of the body.
Pronation
Rotation of the forearm that moves the palm downward or backward, or the foot's movement towards the midline.
Supination
Rotation of the forearm that moves the palm upward or forward, or the foot's movement away from the midline.
Retraction
Movement of a body part backward or towards the posterior.
Protraction
Movement of a body part forward in the horizontal plane, often referring to the shoulder blades or jaw.
Elevation
The upward movement of a body part, such as raising the shoulders or jaw.
Depression
Movement of a body part downward, typically in reference to the shoulder or jaw.
Rotation
Movement around an axis, often involving limbs or the head.
Internal Rotation
A movement that brings a limb or joint closer to the midline of the body, often seen in the shoulder or hip.
External Rotation
Movement of a body part away from the midline, typically referring to the shoulder or hip.
Inversion
A movement that tilts the sole of the foot toward the mid line of the body, often seen in the ankle.
Eversion
A movement that turns the sole of the foot outward, moving it away from the mid line of the body.
Dorsiflexion
Movement of the foot that brings the toes closer to the shin, decreasing the angle between the dorsum of the foot and the leg.
Plantar Flexion
Movement of the foot that increases the angle between the dorsum and the leg, pointing the toes downward.
Frontal Plane
Divides the body into front (anterior) and back (posterior) parts.
Saggittal Plane
Divides the body into left and right parts
Transverse Plane
Divides the body into upper (superior) and lower (inferior) parts.
Radial Deviation
Bending the wrist toward the thumb side (radius).
Ulnar Deviation
Bending the wrist toward the little finger side (ulna).
Opposition
Movement of the thumb to touch the fingertips.
Circumduction
Circular movement combining flexion, extension, abduction, and adduction.
Anatomical Position
Standing Upright, facing forward, arms at sides, palms facing forward.
Anterior
Toward the front of the body.
Posterior
Toward the back of the body.
Superior
Above or toward the head.
Inferior
Below or toward the feet.
Medial
Toward the mid line of the body
