Pronator teres
Flexor carpi radialis
Superficial digital flexor (SDF)
Flexor carpi ulnaris
Deep digital flexor (DDF)
Pronator quadratus
name the caudomedial muscles of the forearm (6)
Pronator teres
Origin: arises from the medial epicondyle of humerus
Insertion: converges on the insertion of the supinator on the radius/ medial border of the radius
Action: to rotate the forearm medially
Innervation: Median nerve
Flexor carpi radialis
most medial and runs directly caudal to the subcutaneous border of the radius. It ends on the upper end of 2nd MC bone
Origin: medial epicondyle of the radius
Insertion: base of metacarpals 2 and 3
Action: to flex the carpal joint
Innervation: Median nerve
Superficial digital flexor (SDF)
Origin: arises from the medial epicondyle of the humerus
Insertion: inserts on the middle phalanx of digit 2 to 5
Action: to flex the carpal, metacarpopharyngeal, and proximal interpharyngeal joint of digits 2-5
Innervation: Median nerve
Flexor carpi ulnaris
two-headed muscle (ulnar head and humeral head) inserting on the accessory carpal bone
Origin: ulnar head- caudal border and medial surface of the olecranon, humeral head- medial epicondyle of the humerus
Insertion: accessory carpal bone
Action: to flex the forepaw with abduction
Innervation: Ulnar nerve
Deep digital flexor (DDF)
three-headed muscle arising from the humerus , radius, and ulna.
It inserts on the distal phalanx.
Origin: humeral head-medial epicondyle, ulnar head-caudal border of ulna, radial head-medial border of the radius
Insertion: flexor tubercle of the distal phalanx on each digit
Action: to flex the forepaw
Innervation: Ulnar nerve and Median nerve
Pronator quadratus
Found only in carnivores
It passes from the shaft of the ulna to that of the radius , bridging the medial aspect of the interosseous space of the forearm
Supplied by median nerve
Origin: apposed surfaces of the radius and ulna
Insertion: apposed surfaces of the radius and ulna
Action: to pronate the paw
Innervation: Median nerve
