beaker
A piece of glassware that comes in various sizes to accomodate various volumes of liquids QUALITATIVELY, as the meniscus on a beaker is way too undefined to be able to read it accurately, so one never uses a beaker to measure accurate volumes. They are made of heat resistant glass and can be used to heat liquids on a hot plate or with a bunsen burner.
graduated cylinder
A tall, narrow, cylindrical piece of glassware that is used to measure accurate volumes of liquids.
erlenmeyer flask
A piece of glassware that comes in various sizes that is used primarily for titrations where swirling of the contents is necessary. The shape of the neck is such that as swirling or mixing occurs, there is very little chance of splashing or leaking of the contents.
watch glass
A glass dish that is used to put on top of a beaker or other piece of glassware so that one can cover the container while still see what's going on inside. It can also be used to analyze or dry a sample of a solid.
crucible and cover
A clay cup and cover that is used to heat samples strongly over a bunsen burner. The cover is left ajar to prevent spattering of the contents.
evaporating dish
A small clay bowl that is used to heat samples over high heat.
plastic funnel
A plastic piece of equipment that is primarily used to filter solids from liquids or to help transfer liquids from one container to another with a narrow opening.
stirring rod
A glass rod that is used to stir contents or to help control the flow of liquids when pouring a sample from one container to another.
test tube
A long, narrow, glass tube that comes in various sizes and is used to heat samples as well as to just mix samples and perform reactions.
test tube stopper
A rubber cork that is used to seal the contents of a test tube inside.
fabric pot holder
A quilted fabric square that is used to protect your hands from hot contents.
hot plate
An electric plate that can be used to heat up samples instead of using a bunsen burner.
four beam balance
An analog balance that can measure mass of a sample to 0.001 g.
analytical balance
An electronic digital balance that can measure mass of a sample to 0.001 g. The sliding glass walls and ceiling are there to minimize any breezes that can affect the mass reading.
bunsen burner
A cylindrical metal piece of equipment that mixes a gaseous fuel sample with the oxygen in the air to enable combustion of the fuel to occur when the reaction is initiated by a match or a spark.
beaker tongs
Metal tongs that are coated with rubber for securely gripping a hot beaker. It is NOT to be used in a flame, as the rubber coating will burn.
clay triangle
A clay coated wire triangle that is used on top of a ring clamp to hold a crucible in place during the heating process.
crucible tongs
Metal tongs that are used to lift and transport a crucible or evaporating dish.
ring clamp
A metal iron ring that is fastened to a ring stand and is used as an integral part of many heating setups.
scoopula
A metal scoop to transfer solid samples.
test tube clamp
A metal clamp (may be rubber coated or not) that is fastened to a ring stand whose purpose is to hold a test tube in place as it is being heated in a bunsen burner flame.
test tube holder
Spring activated metal holder that is used to transport a test tube.
wire gauze
A square metal screen with a fire retardant center that is used on top of a ring clamp to support a beaker as it is being heated on a bunsen burner.
thermometer clamp
A metal clamp that is used to hold a glass thermometer in place on a ring stand.
tweezer
A piece of metal equipment that is used to pick up small objects.
ceramic cooling square
A white ceramic tile with a wood frame that is used as a surface to place hot objects until they cool.
test tube rack
A wooden stand used to hold test tubes of various sizes.
plastic test tube rack
A plastic stand used to hold test tubes of various sizes.
hand soap
Soap that is used to clean your hands after a lab experiment is conducted.
sponge
Used to clean the lab station surface after an experiment is conducted.
scrub sponge
Used to clean more stubborn, stuck on dirt that requires a bit more abrasion.
test tube brush
A long handled brush used to clean the contents of a test tube or graduated cylinder.
beaker brush
A long handled brush with a rounded surface used to clean the contents of beakers or erlenmeyer flasks.
mortar and pestle
A clay bowl and grinder that is used to pulverize solids into powder form.
side arm erlenmeyer flask
A piece of glassware that is used in the process of vacuum filtration. The side arm connects to a hose which is connected to a suction source.
double sided spatula
A small, micro spatula with two different sides that is used to scoop up small samples of solids.
