Five Freedoms
A framework for animal welfare comprising freedom from hunger and thirst, freedom from discomfort, freedom from pain, injury, and disease, freedom to express natural behavior, and freedom from fear and stress.
Freedom from Hunger and Thirst
The requirement that animals must have access to fresh water and a diet that maintains them in good health.
Freedom from Discomfort
The requirement that animals must have a suitable living environment, including shelter and a comfortable resting area.
Freedom from Pain, Injury, and Disease
The requirement that animals must be kept in a manner that prevents injury and disease, and must have access to medical care if needed.
Freedom to Express Natural Behavior
The requirement that animals must have sufficient space, proper facilities, and the opportunity to express their natural behavior.
Freedom from Fear and Stress
The requirement that animals must be kept in conditions and treated in a way that protects their mental well-being.
