What is the purpose of written fire department regulations?

What are fire department regulations?
Written rules and requirements that guide personnel and operations.
What else governs fire departments?
Municipal ordinances, state/provincial and federal laws, and codes and standards adopted by the AHJ.
What is a firefighter's responsibility regarding regulations?
Learn and adhere to department regulations and know where to find documents that apply to duties, authority, and responsibility.
What is a policy?
A guide to decision making that sets boundaries and establishes standards of conduct expected from organization members.
What can policies address?
Working hours, emergency response guidelines, chain of command, certification training, and operational needs.
What are organizational norms?
Unwritten policies or past practices resulting from an organization's traditional approach to routine tasks.
Why can organizational norms be dangerous?
They may be unclear or outdated and can result in dangerous consequences or legal liability.
What is a procedure?
A detailed written plan listing specific steps for approaching a recurring problem or situation.
What is a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)?
A procedure that enables members to perform a specific task to a required standard.
What is a Standard Operating Guideline (SOG)?
A guideline similar to an SOP that may allow firefighters some leeway in particular situations.
What is the difference between SOPs and SOGs?
SOPs are generally hard-and-fast rules, while SOGs may allow some flexibility.
Where can firefighters find regulations?
They are typically available through department offices, stations, facilities, divisions, electronic systems, or posted notices.
What should you do if you have a question about a regulation?
Ask a supervisor and locate the applicable department document.
