What is Physics?
Physics is how things work, including math to predict what happens next. It covers topics like motion, forces, energy, momentum, rotation, fluids, heat, and oscillations.
What tools are needed for the course?
A calculator that can do square roots and trig functions, UToledo email, access to Blackboard, and MasteringPhysics.
How does iClicker work in class?
Points for voting, no penalty for incorrect answers.
How do I access MasteringPhysics?
Access MasteringPhysics with the prepaid access code PSKYNG-TTBBO-RANCH-DRIBS-WERSH-RITES.
What is the exam format?
Three in-class exams (not cumulative), one cumulative final exam.
How to get an A in the course?
By practicing and not memorizing, staying organized, and seeking help when needed.
How should I show my work?
Write down each step as if you were leaving a note for someone else.
What constitutes collaboration in this course?
Talking during voting, working with others on homework and studying.
What is the process of science?
Observations must prove or disprove, repeatable, counter-intuitive truths, changing with new evidence.
What are the three fundamental SI units?
Length in meters, mass in kilograms, time in seconds.
How do you manipulate numbers in scientific notation?
Deal separately with front numbers and exponents.
What limits the final answer when using significant figures?
The number of significant figures in the least accurate number.
What are the three rules for converting units?
Multiplying something by 1 never changes it, units can be treated like algebraic quantities, treat constants and conversions as infinite sig figs.
What is the difference between scalars and vectors?
Scalars have magnitude only and vectors have both magnitude and direction.
How do you add vectors by drawing?
Draw vectors tip to tail without changing angle or magnitude, and then draw one final vector from the tail of the first to the tip of the last.
What are the definitions of sine, cosine, and tangent?
sin(θ) = opposite/hypotenuse, cos(θ) = adjacent/hypotenuse, tan(θ) = opposite/adjacent
How do you resolve vectors into components?
Break down vectors into horizontal and vertical components, using positive angles for calculation, and determine the sign based on the direction of the vector.
How do you add vectors using trigonometry?
Add components for each direction (horizontal, vertical) and then use the Pythagorean theorem and inverse trig functions to determine the final vector.
How do you manipulate algebraic questions?
Need to know how to do the manipulation. What happens to one side happens to the other.
What equations should you use when manipulating equations?
KE = 1/2mv^2 and PE = mgh. The problem doesn’t give you the mass of the ball (solving symbolically).
