Minority Group

A subordinate group whose members have significantly less control or power over their lives than those of a dominant or majority group.

Social Construction of Race

The idea that race is not scientifically based but rather created through social norms, perceptions, and meanings.

Extermination

The most extreme approach to dealing with a subordinate group, involving the deliberate elimination of that group; an example is genocide.

Prejudice

A negative attitude toward an entire group of people, involving thoughts and beliefs rather than actions.

Microaggressions

Daily verbal indignities that members of a minority group experience, which can be either intentional or unintentional.

Discrimination

The denial of opportunities and equal rights to individuals and groups as a result of prejudice or other arbitrary reasons.

Assimilation

The process by which a subordinate individual or group takes on the characteristics of the dominant group and is eventually accepted as part of that group.

Intersectionality

The overlapping and interdependent systems of advantage and disadvantage that position people in society based on race, class, gender, and other characteristics.

Color-blind Racism

Using race-neutral principles to defend the racially unequal status quo.

Bogardus Scale

A scale created to measure social distance, which assesses how willing people are to interact with various racial and ethnic groups.

Affirmative Action

The positive effort to recruit minority group members, including women, for jobs, promotions, and educational opportunities.

Cultural Appropriation

Misusing or misrepresenting symbols and images from different cultures.

Relative Deprivation

The conscious experience of a negative discrepancy between legitimate expectations and present actualities.

Institutional Discrimination

The denial of opportunities and equal rights as a result of the normal operations of a society.

Hate Crimes

Crimes motivated by bias against race, color, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, or disability.

Scapegoating Theory

A theory suggesting that prejudiced individuals blame others and refuse to accept personal responsibility for societal issues.
